Have you ever thought about how you coordinate a thought with physical action? Basic synchronization is something that we not only can do instinctively, but something we learn to do well.
If you’ve ever watched a small child learn to drink from a tumbler, you know what internal timing takes. The kid wants a drink and reaches for the container. Her coordination is just slightly off kilter so the milk is knocked over. Soon enough, she learns how to grasp the tumbler. Then she wishes to drink some milk from the glass. Oops! Some of it dribbles down her face while she tries to get the liquid into her mouth. Maybe she chokes a bit because too much got in the mouth without coordinating the breathing, swallowing actions. The child does soon master the act of drinking beverages from the tumbler. She doesn’t give much thought to it afterwards.
Do you remember learning how to write? Your mind and body were unsynchronized. You could see the letters of the alphabet on the blackboard or in the textbook. You wanted to copy the forms. Your efforts were likely unsuccessful. But you practiced over and over. Before you knew it, the act of writing letters of the alphabet became automatic. Soon, you began to use the letters to form words and simple sentences on paper. It happened when you synchronized mind and body.
You can duplicate this practice by learning to write in a foriegn language. If you wish to write a Russian sentence, you need to learn to recognize and to write in the Cyrillic alphabet. This can be very difficult for most Americans, but not impossible.
The same for Japanese. You must learn the various forms of Kana and Kanji in order to execute written Japanese comunication. Of course, you need to learn Japanese vocabulary, too. All of this requires synchronizing mind and body.
In very basic terms, we can practice skillful internal timing and not let it get sloppy. When your lover is telling you something, do you hear his words as sound? Or do you listen to him speak and understand, deeply, his heartfelt communication? This takes practice. Listening is a skill that we need to develop and to use.
When walking through your neighborhood or driving down the street, do you just look at the familiar and make note of what seems unusual? Or do you actually see what is going on? Do you really pay attention?
Try this simple exercise.
Choose an object, any simple object will do. Maybe a flower, or your coffee cup. Without naming the object, daisy or tulip or flower. Not mentally telling yourself cup, mug, pottery, ceramic item. Just deeply see the object. Don’t give it any meaning, just see it.
Do you notice a sort of “prelanguage” way of internal communication? This takes some practice, but it’s worth it.
When you start to get the hang of it, your internal timing will improve. But don’t do the practice with the aim of improving or achieving a goal. Simply do it and feel the joy of synchronizing inner and outer.
If you do this practice deeply and sincerely, that “prelanguage” will let you know, deeply and sincerely, that you have an integral place with the earth. You will instinctively know that you don’t need to apologize for your existance.
You can merge your behavior with the inner knowledge of your basic goodness. You can then use your internal timing for physical actions that harmonize with other people, creatures, plantlife and our earth.
