Fortune?

Jorge decided to drop by for a visit this weekend.  His home state, Colorado, is suffering under the threat of continued forest fires and drought.  Meantime, here in Norfolk, Nebraska, we are enjoying a relatively moist year.  I enjoyed seeing Jorge’s eyes light up with joy at the rumble of thunder outdoors.fortune-gameshow

He mentioned the fact that where a person chooses to live, his fortunes can be greatly affected.  We chatted for a few minutes about how this is true in various ways around the world.  It might be the random effects of the weather and global climate change.  An entire peoples’ fortunes might be influenced by whether or not they live in a place governed by beneficent or oppressive leaders.

In that the word “Fortune” had arrived in our conversation, Jorge begged me to retrieve one of my Tarot decks.  He said that he had been experimenting with the basic three card spread.  However, he’d only been using it on himself.  He wanted to see what cards may come up when using the spread on me.  What would happen when our minds interacted together with the card play?

Let me remind you that both of us are skeptical of anything that smacks of woo.  However, we’re both interested in techniques that can trigger or are influenced by the mind, consciously or subconsciously.

I brought out the Rider Waite deck that we’ve used together several times and then handed it to him.  Jorge carefully shuffled three times then had me cut the stack twice. He then placed the deck on a mat and fanned it out.  I covered his eyes with my hands so that he couldn’t peek at the cards. Jorge then pulled out three Tarot cards from the fanned array.  I removed my hands from in front of his face and then sat down in my easy chair to see what came up.

The cards were placed together in the order they were drawn. The first card is the past, the second is the present, and the third card represents the near future.  Right away, I was astonished at what came up.  Amazingly, none of the cards appeared upside down, reversed.

The present was represented by the Wheel Of Fortune card. In either upright or reversed, this card is an auspicious one. Since it came up unreversed, the meaning is supposedly stronger.  Because Jorge was only interested in my general state of being and current happenings, it’s funny how the card that represents destiny, success, happiness, luck, and fortune appeared in the position of present aspect.

In the past position, was the nine of Pentacles.  This card indicated that my recent past was dominated by discernment, safety, prudence, and accomplishment.  Subjectively, I had to admit that this was spot on, accurate.

The future card came up as the deuce of Pentacles.  It’s implied message is that anything that is worrying me is more imaginary than actual.  The image suggests gaiety and recreation activities. On the other hand, it can represent writing and trouble.  It’s more ambiguous in that nothing concrete is “in the cards” for my immediate future. In that we were only looking for a general, overall view of my life, it appears that the recreational ingredient was to be the highlight.  And, as when friends get together, that turned out to be the case.

Our little adventure in fortune-telling was fun.  It did lead to a conversation about the word “Fortune”.  There are so many meanings of the word.  Aside from the practice of Fortune-Telling, fortune can mean luck or destiny.  Sometimes it refers to a great amount of money.  It used to refer to an incident or accident; however we now use the word misfortune in that case.

Cicero once said, “I never admire another’s fortune so much that I become dissatisfied with my own.”  In that we have largely forgotten such wisdom, our world has suffered as a result.  We might cast an unknowing eye at the family down the street who lives in the large, luxurious house and possesses a big, shiny truck.  Maybe the family vacations in Europe each year.  Do we judge the family as good or bad because of their fortune?  Do we honestly bring ourselves down a notch or two by comparing ourselves to that family? In response, I can only quote Euripides, “No one is truly free, they are a slave to wealth, fortune, the law, or other people restraining them from acting according to their will.”fortune-taha

“Fortune pays you sometimes for the intensity of her favors by the shortness of their duration. She soon tires of carrying anyone long on her shoulders.” So said Baltasar Gracian.  If a person makes a goal of good fortune, alone, she will soon become jaded and bored, only striving after more and more, like an addict on a drug.  While the satisfaction that comes from sincerely helping others, brings about a deeper sense of good fortune and happiness.  We can sense this truth at a glance.

Jorge says he would rather possess a positive character and practice good ethics than to simply have a large bank account.  While not denigrating the good that can be done with wealth, money alone is not his measure of good fortune. I have to agree with him.  Nothing can beat the good fortune of knowing and practicing the traits of good character.  If a person has practiced the way of good inner fortune, deep happiness will follow.

One can only be so happy without money, true good fortune is knowing that a balance is needed and God provides on a single belief after the request.
The Tarot are journey cards to a destination and the outcome of the quadrant if she/he stays on her/his current path. It was mis named fortune telling so that it could be deemed evil by christians then outlawed. Hence its not fortune telling and although the deck u display in your post is common by no means is it of any accuracy. Waite is a teller of gloom n doom and if a reader uses such cards run away as fast as you can.
I have been reading cards for 40 plus years. You only have part of the reading finished.
BTW nice gender change with the negative quote insecure men often do such things you may want to think on that before you post someone’s quote.
It is always easy for a wealthy man to say wealth alone is not happiness, then a starving many eat from his plate filled with happiness to fill his belly.

Thanks for the reply. I wasn’t aware that the Waite deck was negative, so I’ll look into that. BTW, neither Jorge nor I are wealthy in the monetary sense. Yes, I understand what you’re saying.

I didn’t mean to say u are wealthy. It is often those that we through whatever means credited a certain person for their prophetic wisdom through quotes that sit in the opposite sight of their saying.
Anyway, the reading warns if you do not learn to juggle your new found funds they will be lost to whimsical chance deals or betting as in the past. It is best to save any winnings won at this time.

That makes sense, in that I do carefully budget and alocate my funds. I will continue along that same trajectory. It works quite well.
