Happy Mothers’ Day

It’s been a few decades since I’ve been able to wish my mom a happy Mothers Day. Although she passed away long ago, I still think about her.

It’s normal and good to contemplate upon motherhood. None of us would be here were it not for mothers. For most of us, mothers were also our primary care givers. Today we devote a holiday in honor of motherhood for the vital roles they fill in our lives and their importance to society.

I skimmed through a vintage photo album that contains family pictures taken in the 1950s. There were precious few that depicted mom and me together during the time I was her only child. I have only fuzzy, abbreviated memories of those days because I was not old enough to accurately retain very many of them.

One of my favorite snapshots has been used in a prior Mothers’ Day blog post. I’ll share it again because it represents those happy times we shared together as mother and son. This photo is noteworthy because we are enjoying a photo album together. These were the first days when I began forming memories about the world around me.

Our small family lived in a little trailer house that was parked in a trailer court in Wakefield, Nebraska. That portable home in that tiny town was just the right place for our budding family of three. Life was simpler then but not necessarily easier. Mom certainly had her hands full because raising a boy can be a hair-raising job.

Today, this vintage snapshot is a sentimental object to ponder. It’s a trigger to memories of mom. It reminds me of the harsh times and the good times she experienced throughout her life.

I’m glad there is a holiday to salute mothers because they more than deserve special recognition. To all the moms who are reading this short post, I wish you a Happy Mothers’ Day.

The Blue Jay of Happiness quotes popular music legend, B. B. King. “Nobody loves me but my mother, and she could be jivin’, too.”
