Today is the official celebration of Memorial Day. Today reminds us that sobering numbers of our nation’s service people sacrificed their lives for their country. It is important to remember that they swore an oath to protect our nation from enemies foreign and domestic. In that freedom and liberty within the framework of a democratic republic is the foundation for the government of the United States of America, it behooves us to remember those who gave their lives so that we can carry on the legacy of our nation’s ancestors.
Today is the federally designated holiday to honor the military personnel who have sacrificed their lives for the survival and preservation of our constitutional democracy. This is a time to respectfully show our gratitude for their courageous actions and service to the nation. It is also important to remember that today is not Veterans’ Day, which is also very important. However, both holidays are times of solemn contemplation over the costs of our freedoms.
In the spirit of the original meaning of Memorial Day, let us never forget our fallen military personnel because freedom is not free.
The Blue Jay of Happiness quotes former President Harry S. Truman. “Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude. America will never forget their sacrifices.”
